After a tumultuous year filled with unexpected challenges, there’s one thing I’ve come to appreciate more than ever: having my own space. It’s something many of us might take for granted until circumstances force us to adapt. For me, that pivotal moment came when our basement flooded, rendering my cherished office unusable. Overnight, I found myself displaced, setting up shop in my kids’ playroom, amidst the chaos of toys and imagination.
Working from the playroom wasn’t ideal, to say the least. Don’t get me wrong, I love my children dearly, but trying to concentrate amid the cacophony of laughter and play proved challenging. Every phone call was a gamble, every attempt at focus a battle against distraction. I longed for the sanctuary of my own space, where I could think clearly, work efficiently, and simply breathe.
Fast forward to now, and I’m thrilled to say that my sanctuary has been restored. Our basement is finally finished, and I’ve been able to reclaim my office. The feeling of walking into that familiar space, with its quietude and familiarity, is nothing short of blissful. It’s not just about having a desk and a chair; it’s about having a place that reflects me, where I can arrange and organize to my heart’s content.
Having my own space isn’t just a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s a refuge from the demands of the outside world, a haven where I can retreat and recharge. In this space, I don’t have to ask for permission to hang a picture or rearrange the furniture. I can surround myself with the things that inspire me, that bring me joy, without worrying about judgment or interference.
But perhaps most importantly, having my own space allows me to set boundaries. It’s a tangible reminder that my time and my energy are valuable, and that it’s okay to prioritize myself. In a world that often demands our constant attention and availability, having a space to call my own is a powerful act of self-care.
So as I sit at my desk, surrounded by familiar books and cherished mementos, I’m reminded of the importance of carving out space for myself. It’s not just about physical surroundings; it’s about claiming ownership of my time, my energy, and my well-being. And for that, I am truly grateful.
